20 Best Travel Destinations for Couples - From Weekend Getaways to Epic Adventures

The romance-travel industrial complex would have you believe that love is something best experienced while overleveraged on a sunset catamaran cruise, clutching a prosecco you didn't really want, surrounded by other couples who are also performing romance for an invisible Instagram audience. It isn't. But some places ARE genuinely better with another person - if only because there's someone to split the bill with, hold your passport while you're in the bathroom, and confirm that yes, the sunset really does look like that and you haven't just had a stroke.

These 20 destinations are organised by trip style, because the "right romantic destination" depends entirely on what kind of relationship you're in. Each includes a realistic daily budget for two and the best month to visit, because nothing kills romance faster than showing up somewhere during monsoon season and then arguing about whose idea this was.

Romantic Classics

Santorini, Greece - Let's get the obvious ones out of the way, like ripping off a plaster. The caldera views from Oia at sunset are as spectacular as your Instagram feed has been telling you for the past decade. The catch is that six thousand other couples have the same idea at the same time, which means your "private sunset moment" will involve being elbowed by a man named Craig from Perth who is trying to get his drone shot. Stay in Imerovigli instead - same views, fewer Craigs. Wine tasting at Santo Wines, a catamaran cruise, and a cliffside taverna dinner make for a flawless day if you can ignore the minor crowd situation. Budget for two: $200 - $350/day. Best month: late September - warm water, and the cruise ships retreat like a tide going out. See our Santorini guide.

Paris, France - Paris as a romantic destination has been so thoroughly mythologised that the actual experience almost can't compete, which is why the Parisians themselves seem so annoyed about the whole thing. Skip the Eiffel Tower queue (everyone else on earth is in it) and walk along the Seine at dusk. The Marais, Montmartre, and Saint-Germain-des-Prés are made for aimless wandering as a couple, which is a polite way of saying "getting lost because neither of you will admit they can't read the map." Share a carafe of wine at a zinc-top bar, get lost in the Musée de l'Orangerie (far less crowded than the Louvre), and eat a €12 crêpe complète at a market stand. Budget for two: $200 - $400/day. Best month: June - long evenings, open-air cinema, and the city at its most alive.

Venice, Italy - Venice is either the most romantic city on earth or an overcrowded theme park where you pay €6 for water while someone else's child screams into your gondola. The difference is timing. Visit in November or early December - no cruise ships, misty canals, and restaurant tables you can actually sit at without a three-hour wait. Get lost in Dorsoduro and Cannaregio, which shouldn't be hard since Venice was designed by someone who actively hated the concept of a grid system. A gondola costs €80 flat rate (not per person, mercifully). Budget for two: $180 - $350/day. Best month: November - moody, atmospheric, and mercifully free of matching-outfit couples.

Amalfi Coast, Italy - The Amalfi Coast looks like someone ran a "photogenic" filter over an entire coastline and then forgot to turn it off. Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi cling to cliffs that would make a structural engineer very nervous. Rent a Vespa in Sorrento, drive the cliff road to Ravello, and try not to think about how narrow the road is or how little the oncoming bus driver appears to care about your continued existence. The SITA bus ($2.50 per ride) is cheaper and more scenic than a taxi, although "scenic" and "terrifying" are essentially synonyms on this particular coast. Budget for two: $180 - $350/day. Best month: May - warm enough for swimming, quiet enough for a table at Da Adolfo. Explore our Amalfi guide.

Adventure Couples

Patagonia, Chile & Argentina - Torres del Paine's W Trek (4-5 days) is the romantic equivalent of couples therapy, except instead of talking about your feelings you're hiking 8 hours a day through landscapes so beautiful they make you forget that your partner has been complaining about their blisters since hour two. Glaciers, granite towers, turquoise lakes, and refugios where you collapse into bunk beds with the romantic ambiance of a boarding school. If your relationship can survive this, it can survive anything. Pair it with a few nights in El Chaltén for day hikes to Fitz Roy. Budget for two: $150 - $250/day (refugio treks). Best month: February - longest days, warmest temps, driest conditions. See our Torres del Paine guide.

New Zealand (South Island) - Drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound, stopping for bungee jumps, canyon swings, and glacier hikes - activities that fundamentally test the question "do I trust this person enough to watch them jump off a bridge." Rent a campervan and freedom-camp at DOC sites ($8/night). New Zealand was built for couples who like doing things together, not just looking at things together while quietly resenting each other's restaurant choices. Budget for two: $150 - $250/day (campervan). Best month: March - autumn colours, stable weather, post-peak prices. Explore our Fiordland guide.

Iceland - The Ring Road in summer is a 10-day road trip through landscapes that don't look real, which is why roughly 80% of the photos taken there look like desktop wallpapers from a 2007 computer. Waterfalls erupting from cliff faces, volcanic black sand beaches, geothermal hot springs you can soak in at midnight under a still-bright sky. In winter, the Northern Lights replace the midnight sun, which means you'll spend your romantic evening standing in a field at 2am staring at the sky while slowly freezing to death. Worth it, probably. Budget for two: $200 - $350/day (car rental + guesthouse). Best month: September - Northern Lights begin, waterfalls still powerful, summer crowds vanished.

Costa Rica - Costa Rica packs adventure into a compact, easy-to-navigate country, which is diplomat-speak for "even if you're both terrible at planning, you probably won't get lost." Zip-lining through cloud forest, soaking in volcanic hot springs at Tabacón, snorkelling off the Nicoya Peninsula. Stay in Monteverde for the cloud forest and Nosara or Santa Teresa for surf and sunsets. Budget for two: $120 - $200/day. Best month: December - dry season begins, green landscapes from recent rains. See our Monteverde guide and Nosara guide.

Asian Romance

Kyoto, Japan - Kyoto is refined romance for couples who consider a tea ceremony more exciting than a beach club, and honestly, they're right. Bamboo groves, moss gardens, geisha districts, kaiseki dinners - it's romance for adults who read. Walk the Philosopher's Path in autumn when the maples turn colours that no Instagram filter can replicate (though millions of photographers will try). Stay in a ryokan with private onsen for at least one night, because there is no more efficient test of a relationship than being naked in a small wooden tub with someone and finding it genuinely peaceful rather than profoundly awkward. Budget for two: $150 - $300/day. Best month: late November - peak autumn foliage, fewer tourists than cherry blossom season. See our Hakone guide for a perfect day trip.

Bali, Indonesia - Bali offers romance at every price point, from $60/night private villas with pools in Ubud (genuinely, not a typo) to Seminyak's beach clubs where you can pay $25 for a cocktail while pretending to be influencers. Uluwatu's clifftop temple at sunset is mandatory. The sunrise trek up Mount Batur ($35/person including breakfast) is a shared experience that will either bring you closer together or end in a 4am argument about who set the alarm wrong. Couples' spa treatments run $30 - $50 per person. Budget for two: $80 - $180/day. Best month: May - dry season starts, rice terraces green, shoulder-season prices.

Maldives - The Maldives is what happens when the concept of "romantic getaway" is taken to its logical extreme - an extreme where you're marooned on a sandbank in the middle of the Indian Ocean, it costs $40 for a club sandwich, and you'd better hope you actually like the person you're with because there is literally nowhere else to go. That said, it IS spectacularly beautiful. And it doesn't have to bankrupt you: local island guesthouses on Maafushi, Dhigurah, and Thulusdhoo offer rooms for $50 - $80/night with access to the same crystal water. A half-day snorkelling trip costs $25 - $40/person. Budget for two: $120 - $500/day (guesthouse to resort range). Best month: February - driest month, best visibility.

Luang Prabang, Laos - A UNESCO-listed town at the confluence of two rivers that manages to be romantic without trying or charging you for the privilege. Morning alms-giving ceremonies, night markets, French-Lao fusion cuisine, and Kuang Si waterfall a short drive away. Stay in a boutique guesthouse on the peninsula for $25 - $40/night, which is roughly what you'd pay for a glass of wine in the Maldives. Budget for two: $60 - $120/day. Best month: November - cool, dry, and the rivers still high enough for scenic boat trips.

City Breaks

Barcelona, Spain - Barcelona does romance the way Spain does everything: loudly, beautifully, and not before 10pm. Gaudí's architecture, vermouth hours in El Born, Barceloneta beach, and dinner whenever Barcelona feels like eating, which is never before your usual bedtime. Walk from the Gothic Quarter to Park Güell, stop at La Boqueria for jamón and manchego, and end the night at a rooftop bar in Eixample, drinking something overpriced but forgivable because the view is unreasonable. Budget for two: $150 - $280/day. Best month: October - beach weather without August crowds or prices.

Prague, Czech Republic - Charles Bridge at dawn requires arriving by 6am to have it nearly to yourself, which means waking up at 5:30am, which means your partner will either deeply love you or deeply resent you for the rest of the trip. Czech beer at $1.50 per half-litre provides an excellent mechanism for forgiveness either way. Prague has some of Europe's best-value fine dining. Stay in Malá Strana for proximity to the castle district. Budget for two: $100 - $200/day. Best month: September - warm, dry, beer gardens still open.

Buenos Aires, Argentina - Take a tango lesson in San Telmo and discover whether you and your partner can maintain physical contact while receiving conflicting instructions in rapid-fire Spanish (you cannot). Eat steak at a parrilla in Palermo, browse antique markets on Sundays, and stay up until 3am because Buenos Aires doesn't believe in early nights and will punish you for trying. The city's economic volatility means the parallel exchange rate can make luxury oddly affordable. Budget for two: $80 - $160/day. Best month: March - autumn warmth without summer humidity.

Lisbon, Portugal - Tram 28 through Alfama, pastéis de nata at Manteigaria, sunset from Miradouro da Graça, and dinner in Bairro Alto where the fado singers make you cry even though you don't speak Portuguese - probably because you don't speak Portuguese, which means the emotion hits without the safety net of comprehension. Day-trip to Sintra for palaces that look like they were designed by a romantically unhinged architect, which they were. Budget for two: $120 - $220/day. Best month: May - perfect weather, pre-summer prices, jasmine blooming everywhere.

Off-Beat Romance

Azores, Portugal - For couples who find Santorini performative (it is). Volcanic crater lakes, hot springs heated by actual volcanic activity rather than a hotel boiler, whale watching from small boats, and almost no other tourists to ruin the illusion that you've discovered something. São Miguel is the main island - drive the perimeter in three days, stopping at Sete Cidades (twin lakes in a caldera), Furnas (where you cook cozido stew underground, which is either brilliantly novel or deeply unhinged depending on your perspective), and natural thermal pools. Budget for two: $100 - $180/day. Best month: June - whale season, warm enough for swimming, wildflowers everywhere. See our Azores guide.

Faroe Islands, Denmark - For couples who think Santorini is overrated and want to prove it by freezing. Dramatic sea cliffs, turf-roofed villages, puffin colonies, and a silence so complete it becomes its own kind of loud. Population: 54,000. Mass tourism: none. Warmest temperature: a heroic 13°C. If your idea of romance involves windproof jackets and the mutual acknowledgement that you are both slightly insane, the Faroes are for you. Rent a car and drive between villages that make you feel like you're in a Scandinavian film about loneliness. Budget for two: $150 - $250/day. Best month: July - longest days, puffin season, warmest temps (still bring layers). Explore our Faroe Islands guide.

Oman - Oman is the Middle East's most underrated couples' destination - safe, welcoming, and free of the over-the-top commercialism of Dubai, which is another way of saying "no indoor ski slopes inside shopping malls." Desert camps under stars in Wahiba Sands, swimming in turquoise wadis, and Muscat's clean-lined white architecture that looks like it was designed by someone who believes minimalism is a form of prayer (it might be). A night in a desert camp costs $80 - $120 for two. Budget for two: $120 - $220/day. Best month: November - warm but not punishing, perfect for wadi hikes and desert nights. See our Nizwa guide.

Montenegro - Montenegro delivers the Adriatic experience at a fraction of Croatian prices, mostly because fewer people have heard of it, which is Montenegro's entire marketing strategy and it's working beautifully. Kotor's medieval old town, the Bay of Kotor's fjord-like setting, Sveti Stefan's fortified island, Budva's beaches - all packed into a country smaller than Connecticut. By the time the influencers catch on and ruin it, you'll already have been. Budget for two: $100 - $180/day. Best month: September - warm sea, golden light, half the July crowds.

How to Choose

The best couples' destination is the one that matches what you both actually want to do - not what looks best in the matching linen outfits you bought for the occasion. Adventure couples will be bored senseless in the Maldives. Beach couples will be genuinely miserable in Patagonia. Be honest with each other, pick the destination that delivers what you actually enjoy, go in the right month, and for the love of everything holy, discuss the itinerary BEFORE you book the flights. The alternative is a week-long negotiation conducted entirely through passive-aggressive sighing, and nobody's Instagram is curated enough to hide that.

Or Skip the Flight Entirely

A contrarian note to end on: a great many couples fly somewhere expensive to reconnect and come home with the same two people they left with, plus a tan. If the actual problem is the distance between you rather than the distance to Santorini, there are people who have made closing that gap their life's work. Diana and Michael Richardson have run The Making Love Retreat, a week for couples in Switzerland, for more than twenty years, and since 2026 Diana's Rekindle Love course brings the same nine weeks into your own home, no boarding pass required. Cheaper than the Maldives, and the only sunset you are obliged to photograph is your own.
